В отличие от многих голливудских крупнобюджетных фильмов, своей формой и своим содержанием этот фильм обязан одному человеку; он не переходил из рук в руки, даже несмотря на затянувшееся производство (1964―1968), за время которого сумма бюджета выросла с 6 до 10 млн долларов. Тем не менее нельзя назвать фильм плодом творчества одиночки: в первую очередь, необходимо упомянуть весьма значительный вклад соавтора сценария – писателя-фантаста Артура Ч. Кларка. В начале 1964 г. Кубрик предложил Кларку написать сценарий фантастического фильма, который изначально существовал бы в виде романа, написанного ими сообща. Отправной точкой для романа и фильма стали рассказы Кларка «Часовой» (1948), «Встреча на заре» (1950) и «Ангел-хранитель» (1950). Работы по написанию сценария и подготовке к съемкам продлились до 29 декабря 1965 г. – 1-го съемочного дня. Сами съемки растянулись на 7 месяцев (они проходили в Англии на студии «Boreham Wood»); монтажно-тонировочный период завершился лишь к концу 1968 г. (более 200 планов фильма требовали спецэффектов). В своей работе Кубрик преследовал одновременно 2 цели: создать самый зрелищный на тот момент фантастический фильм (с самыми тщательными и изобретательными декорациями и спецэффектами, которыми мы во многом обязаны таланту Дагласа Трамбелла) и философскую поэму о судьбе человечества перед лицом Времени, прогресса и вселенной. Стремление к этим 2 целям породило на свет произведение искусства, весьма оригинальное и рискованное по своей конструкции, состоящее из 4 относительно независимых друг от друга частей, позволяющее в полной мере ощутить виртуозность Кубрика и его желание освоить разом все жанровое пространство (как отмечает Бернар Айзеншиц в № 209 «Cahiers du cinéma»: «Мастерство Кубрика проявляется в сопоставлении и соединении 4 характерных тем: научной фантастики о доисторических временах, прогнозов на ближайшее будущее, межпланетных путешествий и, наконец, необъятности галактики в гиперпространстве»). В основе своей 2001 – фильм об ужасе: спокойном, ледяном ужасе, чья природа неразрывно связана с существованием человека во вселенной. Это физический и метафизический страх человека, затерянного в бесконечном пространстве; а кроме того – подстерегающий человека в любой момент истории страх перед неизбежным наступлением нового витка научного прогресса, грозящего принести больше разрушений, чем пользы. Помимо этого, 2001 фантазирует на тему дальнейшего развития человечества: вмешательство инопланетян (выраженное через черный монолит) и мутация главного героя в финале, возможно, породят новую форму жизни – менее унылую и несовершенную, чем та, что хорошо известна нам на данном этапе. С этой точки зрения, фильм можно назвать оптимистическим. Но, поскольку пессимизм Кубрика слишком очевиден на протяжении большей части действия (даже монотонные картины повседневной жизни персонажей, превратившихся в обслуживающий персонал механизмов и управляющего ими электронного мозга, вызывает гнетущее чувство, сродни «смертельной тоске бессмертия», некогда описанной Кокто), его «оптимизм» остается лишь домыслом и имеет право на существование только под большим знаком вопроса. И даже этот оптимизм весьма относителен: ведь лучшее, что может произойти с человечеством, придет извне и случится не по его воле. Возможно, Кубрик выдвигает гипотезу о том, что вся научная эволюция человечества вызвана инопланетным разумом.На уровне формы Кубрик с восхитительным мастерством чередует созерцательные эпизоды (движение огромных кораблей в космосе) и сцены, полные драматизма (см. необыкновенную дуэль персонажа Кира Дуллэя и компьютера «Хэл 9000», который впустую тратит красноречие). Длинные завораживающие и ужасающие эпизоды разбавлены небольшими вкраплениями юмора. Этот юмор иногда скрыт в подтексте (обмен банальными фразами между астронавтами), а иногда лежит на поверхности (использование музыки Штрауса). Все, что нам известно о работе над фильмом, о сомнениях и экспериментах Кубрика, говорит нам о его желании как можно глубже погрузиться в тишину, лаконичность, тайну и загадку. Он удалил закадровый текст в начале фильма, сократил до минимума экипаж «Дискавери», отказался от мысли показать в кадре инопланетян. Это пошло фильму на пользу. Он подстегнул зрительское воображение в такой степени, какая прежде была невозможна в фильмах с подобным бюджетом. (Показателен тот факт, что большинство отзывов на 2001, появившихся в Европе и США, написаны на очень высоком уровне.) Кубрик также приглушил свою тенденцию к грубоватой акцептации приемов: из всех его фильмов 2001 остается самым строгим, цельным и завершенным. Что касается истории научной фантастики, Космическая одиссея, вызвавшая своим появлением шок, отголоски которого слышны до сих пор, вышла на экраны на заре десятилетия, ставшего порой расцвета этого жанра, прежде полвека занимавшего в Голливуде маргинальные позиции.N.В. Артур Кларк написал продолжение романа, и по нему был снят фильм Питера Хайамза 2010 (1984). Кир Дуллэй вновь сыграл в нем ту же роль.
